The British Ecological Society has had a paper accepted by en:mapping and leading UK peatland research groups. The innovative paper deals with the importance of the peatland environment on human well-being. It was presented at the BES annual meeting in September 2010.

Mark Parnell/ en:mapping was responsible for the GIS and modelling aspects of the paper - other authors included the Moors for the Future Partnership (Peak District National Park Authority), the Universities of Bangor, Durham, Leeds and Sheffield.
The paper uses a spatially-explicit GIS mapping approach and different management scenarios to map and evaluate key ecosystem services for four UK peatland case studies, focussing on climate regulation, water quality/quantity regulation, recreation opportunities, and biodiversity.
